Divine Secrets Under Pressure

The sun sank below the horizon, swallowed by heavy clouds that emerged unexpectedly. Emma Hargrave stood on the rooftop of an old office building in what remained of London’s bustling Financial District, feeling the sudden chill slice through her coat. She wiped sweat from her brow; though the air had cooled, her heart raced with anxiety.
Her phone buzzed insistently. She glanced down at the screen to find a text from Tom, her younger brother. “Call me. It’s urgent.” A chilling unease settled in her gut, but she forced herself to reply. “On my way. Just finishing up.”
If she could control the last few hours at the bank—taming the rogue transaction that had been raised to management level—perhaps she could keep her job. She skimmed her notes, running her fingers over the crucial figures. They were small, unnoticed in the grand scheme of things, but they had led to a domino effect that threatened the entire trading floor.
Before she could snap a final photograph of the documents, a dark figure loomed at the rooftop door, blocking the only way down. Emma’s breath quickened again.
“Emma Hargrave,” the figure said in a voice that thrummed with an unearthly resonance. “You have been chosen.”
“Chosen for what?” she asked, backing up until she was flush against the ledge.
“You are destined to stop the ritual,” the figure insisted.
“What ritual? I don’t—”
“Time runs short,” it interrupted, shifting out of shadows and into the light, revealing a face that was striking and ethereal, yet unsettling. Its skin shimmered like polished marble, and its eyes sparkled like distant stars. Emma’s instinct screamed at her to flee while her mind struggled to comprehend the extraordinary.
“Ritual?” she repeated, hoping to buy herself time while calculating escape routes.
The figure gestured toward the city, where dark clouds began to swirl angrily overhead, gathering force. “A harbinger of chaos has been unleashed, and you must prevent the sacrifice before dawn.”
“What do you mean, sacrifice? Who are you?”
“It does not matter who I am,” it replied. “What matters is that you heed my warning. Tonight, a life must be exchanged—a life that is intertwined with yours. Or darkness will take hold of this world.”
Just as Emma opened her mouth to speak again, the figure seemed to evaporate into the air, and the sense of danger left in its wake sent her heart thundering in her chest. She stumbled back from the edge, raising her phone.
She forced down rising panic and dialled Tom.
“Emma! Where are you? It’s all—”
“Tom, listen to me. Are you okay? What’s going on?”
“It’s Mum. She’s in trouble.”
The air felt heavy around her. “Where?”
“In her flat. I came over and found this… symbol on the floor, and—”
“Stay where you are! I’m coming!”
She hung up and scrambled down the staircase, her breath laboured in her chest. She didn’t know what she was facing, but she had to get to Tom. He had always been drawn to the extraordinary, but this—this was different.
As she dashed to the street, she was seized by the sudden realisation that something malevolent lingered, watching. She ignored the thoughts, a mix of fear and dread swirling in her mind as she hailed a taxi.
The ride was excruciatingly long; she kept tapping her phone for updates. There were no responses from Tom. The driver glanced at her through the rear-view mirror, concern clouding his features.
“Everything alright?”
“No. Just drive,” she snapped, her pulse racing.
Finally, they arrived at Tom’s flat—a grim, foreboding building cloaked in darkness. As she rushed inside, the living room came into view: dimly lit, furniture tossed, and the faint echoes of past chaos hung in the air.
“Tom?!” she called, her voice swallowed by unnatural silence. Anxiety twisted her stomach into knots. She bolted through the rooms, searching frantically until she reached a door at the back leading to the kitchen.
There, sprawled on the floor, was Tom, unconscious near a disturbing symbol etched in chalk. An unsettling familiarity washed over Emma as she recognised it from ancient texts during her studies, linked to rituals testing the boundaries of life and death.
Tom stirred as she knelt beside him. “Emma… don’t touch anything.”
“Tom, what happened?”
“They summoned something. Had to stop it.” His voice was weak, but urgency emanated from his eyes.
“Who?” she demanded, straining to comprehend the depth of his turmoil.
“The others. They don’t want us to interfere—I saw them.”
The hairs on Emma’s arms stood on end. She looked around for signs of the others he mentioned, feeling the tension thicken in the air around them. “We need to get out of here.”
“No!” he gasped, grasping her wrist. “You don’t understand. It’s too late. The ritual… they’ve begun.”
The room pulsed with energy, and suddenly, a wave of dread crashed over Emma. The walls closed in and she swayed, vision blurring at the edges.
She gripped Tom’s arm, desperately scanning for an escape. Tension crackled as he shielded himself against the impending chaos erupting in front of them, drawn to the centre of the twisted symbol that threatened to come alive.
“It wants something from us,” he muttered, clutching his head. “A life to seal the boundaries.”
Looming in the corner, shadows coalesced into a figure, eyes burning like molten metal, radiating an aura of dread and power. “I have been summoned. One must enter; one must be given up.”
Panic surged through her. This was the embodiment of the darkness that the angel had warned her about. Emma felt a piercing chill. The entity eyed them with a predatory hunger.
“Refuse its demand, and it shall take all you love,” the angelic figure re-emerged beside her, looking less ethereal, more human in its resolve. “You must choose.”
Emma’s mind raced. Its words twisted inside her, merging with her growing understanding that this choice could sever her connection to Tom forever. “I won’t let it take him!”
“Do not be deceived,” the angel cautioned, trembling slightly. “Sacrifice empowers both darkness and light.”
Reeling, Emma struggled against the weight of her fears. Sacrifice? It echoed through her, taunting every fibre of her being. As she grasped Tom’s hand, anguish swelled.
“I can’t let it have him; I’ll—”
“Emma!” he yelled, but it was too late.
With a desperate cry, she stepped towards the entity, the swirling shadows beckoning her closer. “Take me instead!”
The floor quaked beneath them, and her heart raced as she felt her eyes were set ablaze with raw energy. As she was pulled into the darkness, she felt a fierce love for her brother surge within her, fighting against the encompassing void.
In that moment of connection, the shadows recoiled, their power fracturing beneath the weight of love. Emma realised that her choice had not simply been sacrificial; it had been fortifying.
As dawn broke, she found herself alone, collapsing back onto the cold kitchen floor, gasping for breath. Tom lay beside her, safe but unconscious—a tidal wave of emotions crashed over her.
Though she had sacrificed herself, something greater had emerged. She lifted her head, the remnants of darkness dissipating beyond the window, the first soft light warming the room. There was a price to be paid, but she had held onto hope amid the storm.
And something about that purchasing of time whispered softly in her heart—a divine secret she had yet to understand. But as she looked at her brother, it was worth whatever mystery lay ahead.
