Movie Review: The Nun (2018)
Synopsis:
The Nun is a supernatural horror film that serves as a prequel to the much-lauded Conjuring series, focusing on the origins of the demonic entity known as Valak, who first appeared in The Conjuring 2 (2016). Set in 1952 Romania, the narrative begins at the hauntingly beautiful yet foreboding Cârța Monastery, where a young nun tragically takes her own life. This shocking event alerts the Vatican, prompting them to send a priest with a haunted past, Father Burke, and a novice nun, Sister Irene, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the nun’s death.
Father Burke, portrayed by Demián Bichir, is a seasoned exorcist keen on confronting the forces of evil yet is tormented by his past experiences with demonic possession. Sister Irene, played by Taissa Farmiga, is a nuns-in-training, conveying a spirit of naivety paired with an unshakeable strength. Upon their arrival, they are joined by a French Canadian local, Maurice, known as "Frenchie" (played by Jonas Bloquet), whose ties to the community and the supernatural elements entwine the trio in a sinister tale.
As the investigation unfolds, Father Burke and Sister Irene discover that the monastery is home to dark secrets, ancient curses, and a malevolent force that seeks to wreak havoc on any who dare trespass its hallowed grounds. The Nun combines religious imagery, chilling atmospheres, and unsettling jump scares, presenting a narrative steeped in dread as our protagonists confront not only the supernatural but also their own faith and fears.
