CCTV Watcher on the Midnight Streets
Tamsin had never been the sort to believe in urban legends. The world of supernaturals, phantoms, and tales of the unexplainable felt distant, relegated to the warm glow of her grandmother’s stories on chilly winter nights. But when her best friend Hannah went missing, Tamsin’s indifference was tested in a way she never anticipated.
Hannah had been last seen on a late-night drive home from a party, her car breaking down in a desolate part of town. The roads were rarely travelled, particularly after dark, and it quickly became common knowledge that people felt a sensation of unease in that area. Rumour had it there were things that lurked on those back streets, things that didn’t take kindly to anyone passing through. Yet for people like Tamsin, such tales were little more than a way to frighten teens into staying indoors at curfew.
Days passed without a trace of Hannah, sparking worried queries and frantic messages on social media. Just as her friends began to lose hope, something came to light that rocked Tamsin’s world. A video clip from a local CCTV camera surfaced on the internet, showing a hooded figure standing at the edge of a grimy alley. Details of the sighting rippled through the community like wildfire.
“What are you going to do?” a voice piped up from behind Tamsin as she stared blankly at her phone. Mark, a mutual friend, sidled next to her, glancing at the video that had haunted her for days. “You’re just going to ignore this?”
“I… I don’t know, Mark.” Tamsin’s stomach churned. “Do you think it’s actually real? Could it be Hannah?”
“They say the figure appears to anyone who has something to lose,” Mark continued, his eyes narrowing. “If you go out at midnight—”
“Shut up,” Tamsin shot back, her patience fraying. “You think I’d buy into urban legends? Come on.”
But doubt eked into her mind like a slow poison. How could she be so certain? A hollow ache settled inside her; the thought of Hannah lost in the abyss of those streets gnawed at her conscience. It wasn’t just that she feared losing her friend; it was the torment of not knowing—of having no answers.
The decision solidified under the weight of desperation. Perhaps if she ventured to that alley, examined the situation for herself, she could glean more clues about Hannah’s whereabouts. Against the recommended course of reasoning, Tamsin resolved to arm herself with a flashlight, a can of pepper spray, and her determination.
Arriving at the alley just past midnight felt surreal. The streets were empty, leaving only the distant hum of the city contrasted by an alien quiet. Her heart raced with every step, tightening as her surroundings pressed in around her. A chill prickled her skin as she stepped into the darkness where the CCTV had captured the figure—a dread emanating from the cracks in the pavement and the litter that lay strewn about like forgotten memories.
Then, the uneasy stillness shattered.
Rounding the corner, Tamsin could just make out a lingering form at the mouth of the alley. It was as if the figure were poised, waiting for her—a dark reflex of the night itself. Tamsin’s breath hitched. Was it her imagination?
She took a cautious step nearer, gripping her flashlight, ready to illuminate the shrouded figure. As the beam splashed across the spot where it had stood, the moment turned into spectral game of hide and seek; the figure slipped into the void between the brick walls as if the shadows themselves were playing tricks.
“Hey!” she shouted after it. There was no response, but the silence hung oppressive in the air. Her instincts screamed for her to turn around, but she was anchored by her commitment to uncover the truth.
A sudden beeping from her phone startled her; a social media notification. It was a new video posted from another local—the CCTV footage again, but this time capturing something she had missed. The comments overflowed with theories, urging everyone to stay away, to heed warnings. Tamsin felt a pulse of dread as she read words like “They say he feeds on fear,” and “He will come for you if you provoke him.”
“Ha, nonsense,” she murmured to herself, but the words felt weak as they rolled off her tongue. They began to seep in, embedding themselves in her mind as she continued to stand there, grappling with both disbelief and an insatiable curiosity.
Returning home, unsettled and frustrated, Tamsin resolved to piece everything together. She researched the area’s history through old newspaper archives—stories of people going missing, of odd sightings at night. Her search unearthed that the local legend, known simply as the ‘CCTV Watcher,’ had persisted for years, only resurface now and then when someone dared challenge the perceived rule of the midnight streets.
Dismissing it became increasingly impossible when she noticed changes in her own life. A creeping anxiety began to stalk her; a feeling of being observed, of something just out of view. It gnawed at her day and night. She became reluctant to step outside as if the streets might dissolve beneath her.
Days melted away, and as each moment passed, Tamsin began feeling less like herself. Friends mentioned her distractibility, her sudden reticence—a darkness she couldn’t explain hanging over her like rain clouds. And yet, she remained resolute in her search for Hannah, a stubborn vigilance standing in resistance to the creeping dread within her.
“You need to stop this,” Mark implored one evening as they sat in her kitchen. “You’re getting consumed by it, Tamsin. If you go down this road—”
“Down what road?!” she snapped, fury tinged with fear. “I can’t just let her go. I can’t.”
“You’re talking about a legend.” Mark’s face was pale, almost pleading. “It’s not real. You have to accept that.”
“Accept that?” she scoffed, feeling the tension coil tighter. “What if she’s counting on me?”
Each night, she succumbed further into the legend, visiting the alley in search of movement, evidence—anything to indicate Hannah’s fate. Until one night, amidst the gloom, she saw him; the CCTV Watcher, just beyond her reach. A figure cloaked in darkness, the sense of danger palpable in the air.
She felt her fear transform, shooting arrows straight into her heart. And yet she felt compelled to approach him. “Where is she?” she called out, defiance powering her voice.
As if in answer, the figure seemed to stretch, elongating with an alien grace, moving ever closer. Tamsin felt cold metal press against her skin—a weight she’d never felt before. Her mind raced with thought, a last plea.
The watchers—were they really just a story, or was something much darker churning beneath their myth?
With a flash, the figure lunged. Tamsin stumbled back, but too late—something wrapped around her ankle, pulling her into the depths, and she gasped as the ground beneath her seemed to shift, an unearthly grip dragging her down, down, down into nothing.
The next morning, the community woke to a new tale. Tamsin was gone without a trace, and among the conversations blooming like weeds on social media was the chilling, familiar refrain about the CCTV Watcher, lingering now with an air of grim satisfaction.
“Anyone who seeks the truth,” the posts warned, “invites the darkness in.”
