Mind’s Eye: Deadline for Truth

The hum of fluorescent lights filled the sterile lab as Charlotte moved carefully around the rows of equipment, her heart thumping loudly in her chest. The room, usually vibrant with the energy of researchers and students, had stilled, cloaked in an unsettling atmosphere. The rubber soles of her shoes squeaked against the linoleum floor, but the sound felt faint against the weight of the unease that hung in the air.
“Dr. Smith,” she called out, her voice barely breaking the silence. “Where are you?”
She had come to check on her mentor, but it was rapidly becoming more of a chore than a necessity. The remote-viewing experiments they had set up for that evening had gone awry. Last week, an unexpected interruption caused a disastrous feedback loop, and now Charlotte could sense that whatever they had awoken was still stirring.
She glanced at the clocks that lined the walls—counting down the hours until her deadline. They were supposed to be collecting data, but since their last session, a series of bizarre incidents had erupted in the lab: equipment malfunctioning, strange readings, and whispers of forgotten names that seemed to cling to the air. It was as though the spirits of their research had taken a life of their own.
Then she noticed the door at the end of the hall stand ajar, flickering lights spilling out like hesitant fingers.
Charlotte moved cautiously towards it, her heartbeat quickening. As she stepped inside, her eyes widened. The room was in chaos. Data screens were shattered, papers scattered as if swept by a storm, and in the centre stood a shadow—a figure shrouded in darkness, hunched over her mentor’s unconscious body.
“Get away from him!” she shouted, but the figure turned slowly. Beneath its hood, she could only see a glimmering void, a swirling mass reflecting the distress in the room.
“Charlotte. You should not have come here,” it rasped, the voice a grotesque mimicry of her own.
Every instinct screamed at her to run, but fear had become an anchor. “What are you?”
“Your mind is a gateway.” It gestured toward the wreckage surrounding them. “You opened a door that must remain shut.”
The entity lunged, but Charlotte recoiled, scrambling backward. Just then, she heard the familiar chime of the lab’s main computer—an alert of their remaining time. They had only six hours left to complete their mission or the consequences would be irreversible.
“No! You won’t take him!” she cried, her voice trembling but fierce. Adrenaline surging, she hurled a chair into the space between them. The shadow dissipated momentarily before forming again, its presence pulsing with palpable malice.
Gripping her phone, Charlotte began to consider her options. If this supernatural threat—the shadow—was linked to the remote-viewing experiment, she needed to reverse the damage. Their work had been aimed at tapping into the hidden realms of perception, but now it had torn open a rift they could hardly comprehend.
Darting out, Charlotte grabbed her bag, flipping through the notes and equipment they had gathered over months of research. There it was—a sigil she’d come across in an obscure text, a protective symbol capable of sealing portals. It was a long shot, but she had no other options.
With time counting down, she sprinted back to the lab and grabbed a marker, her hands shaking as she sketched the sigil on the floor. The shadow swept toward her, growing larger, its form twisting with rage.
“You cannot trap me, Charlotte.”
“I’m not trying to trap you,” she replied, forcing steadiness into her voice despite the fear gripping her heart. “I want to understand you.”
“What you seek is not truth but oblivion,” it hissed, and with a rush of wind, the lights in the lab flickered again, illuminating phantom figures dancing at the edge of her vision.
Charlotte placed her hand on the sigil, grounding herself in the rhythmic pulse of energy surging beneath her fingertips. “I’m ending this.”
In that split second, a cacophony of memories surged through her mind—all her research, her failures, her dreams of understanding consciousness—the yearning for truth clashing against the terror of what had stirred beneath.
As she began to chant the words she could barely remember, the room went dark, the energy rapidly switching from an eerie calm to an explosive outburst of pain. It engulfed her completely, a maelstrom of voices and images, pressing down on her like a weight she couldn’t bear.
“Stop! You don’t know what you’re doing!”
Her resolve faltered, the shadows around her whispering doubt. But at that moment, something within her sparked—a memory of Dr. Smith’s passion, the late nights they’d spent labelling phenomena as possibilities rather than threats.
Charlotte pressed on. The sigil began to glow. The voices screamed in tandem, a chorus of anguish and rage that rattled her very soul. But she had to choose—either close the portal or risk everything they had achieved, including Dr. Smith’s life.
As clarity faded, she saw it—one last glimmering truth amongst the chaos. The energy could not simply be banished; it needed to be transformed, reshaped into something else entirely.
“Show me!” she shouted, abandoning her original intention to close the rift. “Show me who you are!”
Something shifted then, and the entity shrieked with a primal fury. In a surreal moment, the darkness around her twisted into fleeting images—memories of lost souls, of hopes extinguished by ignorance and fear. Everything flooded her mind, vast and terrible, pressing against her consciousness like a tidal wave.
The sigil pulsed, a bright flare illuminating the dimensions of horror that fissured between worlds. Those whispers grew louder and became recognisable, forming coherent words of sorrow and regret.
Time frayed at the edges around her as Charlotte wrestled with her burgeoning understanding. The deadline she had sensed was approaching fast, clouds of maleficence swirling, but she had tapped into something powerful. In this moment, she grasped the truth she had desired all along—a flicker of empathy buried under layers of pain.
“No more oblivion,” she reaffirmed, her voice rising against the din. “You will be heard.”
The sigil blazed, and the shadows cried out, twisting desperately, before everything imploded around her in a cosmic flash.
As silence enveloped the lab, Charlotte fell to her knees, gasping for breath. The entity had dissolved into a haze of shimmering particles, leaving behind the lingering echo of what she had glimpsed—a truth too vast to comprehend, but illuminating nonetheless. Dr. Smith lay unconscious, yet as she checked for his pulse, she felt the warmth beneath her fingers—he would recover.
The clock ticked down to zero, but Charlotte knew that their mission had not failed. They had opened a door, but one she hoped would now lead to understanding rather than chaos. Time would tell what consequences lay ahead, but for now, she had chosen to embrace the unknown.
