Urban Legends

The Last Upload Challenge

Lila Hastings had little time for urban legends, especially those that had the added sprinkle of social media hype. A thirty-year-old data analyst by trade, she preferred facts and figures over ghost tales and folklore. But it was a Wednesday evening when she first heard about the Last Upload Challenge, nestled in the usual chatter of her workplace break room.

“Basically,” said Mark, a junior analyst with an affinity for the sensational, “you have to upload a video of yourself doing something risky—like skateboarding down the old hill by Blackwood Park. The catch? You can’t stop recording until the hills are out of sight, and if you do, you have to wait until midnight for the ‘payment’.”

“What payment?” Lila replied, unimpressed.

“Apparently, a curse gets you. You record, then don’t upload; bad things happen, like power cuts or weird vibes—” Mark laughed, shrugging.

“Sounds like the plot of a cheap horror flick,” she said, returning to her phone.

But Lila’s dismissal didn’t stop the wheels of her mind from turning. Outside of work, she often found herself gravitating to excitement; thrill-seeking had always been her escape from the mundane. And despite her scepticism, part of her wondered if trying the challenge might shake off some of the monotony surrounding her life.

It was a Saturday when Lila finally decided to give it a go, armed with nothing but a smartphone and a slight recklessness that had lain dormant for too long. Blackwood Park was a fifteen-minute jog from her flat, and its rolling hills hosted stories of teens forming bonds while conjuring spirits beneath a waning moon. She knew of the park’s legend, but it had lost significance over the years, especially as new stories claimed the public’s attention.

She arrived just before dusk, the sky an amber hue that seemed to seep through the trees. The challenge felt lighter in the fading daylight, its supernatural aspects beginning to seem laughable. After all, this sort of thing was just for fun, right? She took a deep breath and set up her phone, recording herself with a cheeky grin.

“Hi, internet! Here’s Lila, coming at you live from Blackwood Park. We’re about to do something wacky. Ten-second countdown… You’ll see how fearless I am!”

She launched herself down the hill, wind whipping through her hair, laughter escaping her lips as her adrenaline soared. But before she knew it, the hill stretched on further than expected; she couldn’t bring herself to stop the recording. Trees sped past, their branches clawing at the sky, and for a moment, freedom flooded through her veins; a rush that felt intoxicating.

Then came an unsettling shift. It felt as if the air had thickened; suddenly, everything sounded muted. The joyous cacophony of nature dulled, and the vibrancy of dusk faded. The sensation brought a shiver, and just before rounding a bend, Lila saw her reflection in a glassy puddle. Her wild expression slowly morphed into hesitation.

Instinctively, she veered left, forgetting the camera in her grip. She disorientedly stumbled, nearly losing her balance. It was only as sunlight dimmed in full that she realised she had interrupted the stream. Panic buried itself in her gut, and she yanked the phone closer, pressing the upload button without thought.

“I’ve uploaded! You’re welcome!” she said with forced nonchalance, feigning ease in the face of something she imagined only existed in fabricated nightmares.

Only when she made her way back to the car, heart still racing from her escapade, did she notice the thickening silence surrounding her. No birdsong, no rustle of branches—it was as if the whole forest held its breath. Little did she know, this moment of fearlessness would alter everything she once took for granted.

Days passed without incident, until late Tuesday night. Lila was drifting into sleep when a loud crackle jolted her awake. Groggy and unsettled, she reached for her phone to check the time—a habit borne from countless late nights in the office.

The screen glowed at her with one new notification—a comment on her Last Upload video. “You shouldn’t have uploaded, Lila.”

The comment sent a wave of cold dread through her veins. She dismissed the notification, chalking it up to an overzealous troll. Still, an inexplicable weight sat in her chest as sleep evaded her.

Within the next week, strange occurrences began surfacing in her life. Her usually reliable commute turned torturous; trains were delayed, buses ceased to arrive, and every café she visited served drinks wrong. Lila brushed it off, convinced it was a mere streak of bad luck. That was until she turned up for a casual gathering one weekend only to find the atmosphere unnaturally bizarre.

Mark greeted her with a concerned look, and the laughter surrounding the gathering faded as he approached her. “You okay?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” she replied, feigning indifference.

“We’ve been worried about your video…” he started, but hesitated, glancing at the growing group of eager ears nearby.

“Right—what’s the fuss?”

“It’s just…” He swallowed hard, the words barely escaping. “People are saying things. Ever since you uploaded, there have been disappearances. Someone mentioned that if you look into what you’ve recorded, you’ll find what’s behind the curse.”

At his words, comprehension washed over her in waves. “What—who’s gone missing?”

Mark rather sheepishly tipped his gaze to Danny, their coworker known for his adventurous spirit. The information sent a shock through Lila, mortifying her insides. “Where is he?”

“Few said he tried to redo your challenge and never returned.”

Lila’s throat tightened as the weight of her decision crashed about her consciousness. The night wore on with palpable tension. Words between colleagues grew uncertain. Lila, seeking solace, retreated to her phone as a flicker of connection. She browsed comments on her video, her heart sinking deeper with each cascading thread of caution.

“Don’t ignore the warning,” one user left. “The rules are real”—and further unsettling acknowledgments that clawed at her subconscious.

Restlessness succumbed to fear, and she couldn’t shake the feeling she needed to delete her video. Days turned into an agonising whirlwind of worry and helplessness. Once steadfast, she now felt consumed by the quiet dread of being watched.

Finally, Lila decided to take the matter into her own hands. Late one night, she retrieved her phone, heart pounding, and navigated to the app, determined to cleanse her digital footprint once and for all. But when she opened the video, the feedback sent an icy chill down her spine; a flicker of static surrounded her. What should have been her face transformed in the screen—now there was something else, an array of glistening eyes aching to break the surface.

They stared at her, observing, and just like that, the challenge morphed into something far more insidious than she’d anticipated. As she reached for the delete button, the noise crescendoed, and she was gripped with a sense of finality, her decision nearing fruition.

Then it hit her: to delete meant she acknowledged the challenge; it was the act of confrontation that sealed one’s fate.

The next morning, Lila received a call from her mother. Danny had been found, disoriented, wandering near Blackwood Park, and the words became heavy rocks in her throat. He was alive but unresponsive, and the details of his state churned her stomach—emptiness in his eyes, whispers of incomprehensible sound.

The presence lingered in the background of those who knew better, an implicit understanding shared through half-hearted warnings around community circles. As gossip sprouted from fear, Lila realised the truth transcended mere ghost stories.

In a final grasp for control, she returned to Blackwood Park, making her way to the very hill where her life had shifted. But she was not the only one there. A small cluster of local teens were filming their next adventure, chuckling over the cursed tale. Gritting her teeth, she watched them laugh, oblivious to the scorching darkness that dwelled behind their glee.

The legend had merely evolved—crushed spirits, unexplainable phenomena, and darkness that would persist long after her name faded from remembrance. All would learn too late.

With the spectre of the challenge looming over the community, Lila stumbled back towards the trees, leaving behind a ripple of uneasy anticipation. As she stepped away, the first faint crack of thunder rumbled overhead—a sign that whispered of consequences yet to come.
