Timelock: Hunt for the Past Returner

Rain tapped insistently on the windowpane of Jake Mercer’s dilapidated apartment, a distinct reminder of the storm brewing outside. He stood before the mirror, his hands trembling slightly as he plucked the last piece of his brother Alex’s most recent case file from the disarray on his desk. ‘The Past Returner’, it read, ink smudged by the humid air filtering through the broken window.
Without warning, a sudden knock at the door shook him from his thoughts. He opened it to reveal his old mentor, Elinor. In her sharp gaze lay desperation. “Jake, we need to talk. It’s about Alex.”
“What about him?”
“Something’s gone wrong.”
Before Jake could further question her, Elinor stepped inside, glancing over her shoulder as though they were being pursued. There was a wildness to her movements that struck Jake as unsettling.
“Sit.” She beckoned him to the kitchen table. “I don’t have much time. Alex isn’t dead … not exactly.”
Jake’s stomach twisted. “What do you mean?” Confirmation of his fears felt like a stoneskin cloak suffocating him.
“He’s trapped somewhere … a different timeline. A shadow of his essence crossed paths with a dark being known as the Past Returner. We must bring him back before the time shifts lock him away permanently.”
Jake’s resolve hardened as he thought back to the last time they had spoken. Alex had been investigating a pattern of mysterious disappearances in their hometown, discovering an underground organisation with ties to the occult.
“Where do I start?” Jake asked, his voice steady. Despite the irrationality of what Elinor claimed, he felt a fire igniting in his chest.
“We need to perform a retrieval ritual—a risky one, but it will allow his essence to re-materialise in our timeline. We have until midnight. After that, I can’t predict what may happen.”
With his watch ticking louder than his heartbeat, Jake nodded, sensing the urgency. Beyond the flickering fluorescent lights, there lingered the ambient pulse of danger waiting just outside.
Armed with Elinor’s arcane text, they sought out a long-abandoned warehouse down by the docks; the last place Alex had been seen. The structure loomed, its eerie silence as thick as the dark clouds overhead. They entered, the air heavy with the scent of rust and decay.
“Here.” Elinor pointed to a circle etched deep into the concrete floor, remnants of a previous invocation. “We must charge the sigil before we invoke the absent energies.”
Jake felt an unnatural chill sweep across the room as though the air had become charged with unseen currents. The heaviest weight sat in his chest as shadows danced along the walls, hints of movement he couldn’t quite trace.
Just as Elinor began to chant in a language long lost to time, the ground began to tremble, small rocks skittering underfoot. Flickers of light shot through the gaps in the roof, illuminating the corners of the space where shadows skulked away frantically.
“Jake, focus!” Elinor yelled. “Hold the sigil steady!”
The walls moaned, vibrations reverberating through every crevice. A disembodied voice, low and quivering, filled the room. “You shouldn’t have come here.”
Heart racing, Jake spun to the source. An amorphous shadow materialised, its dark essence crackling with malevolence. It coiled around Elinor, who struggled against its grasp as Jake’s scream echoed into the void.
“Don’t fight it!” she warned. “Just complete the spell!”
Despite the growing terror, Jake pressed forward, chanting the words Elinor had taught him. The sigil beneath them glowed faintly; he could feel Alex’s essence responding, caught between realms.
But it was fleeting. A surge of power wrenched through the air, causing the sigil to flicker one last time before plunging into darkness.
Elinor staggered, thrown aside, unable to hold the shadow back. “Jake, we don’t have much time!”
“Dammit, just give me strength!” he roared, desperation clawing at his sanity.
As his rallying cry filled the warehouse, the shadow retaliated, sending waves of cold slicing through the air. It moved quickly, each tendril like a whip. Jake pushed through the fear, his thoughts racing towards Alex, willing him to return, to fight.
Suddenly, a faint outline appeared, a ghostly visage of his brother floating before him. “Jake!” Alex’s voice was strained, marred by anguish. “You have to let go or I may never come back!”
“I won’t leave you!” Jake shouted, feeling the tug-of-war between them intensify. This wasn’t just a choice of return; it was a question of existence.
A rumble struck the space as the shadow let out a piercing wail. The walls seemed to constrict, dragging Jake towards the tendril like a marionette.
“Jake, listen!” Elinor’s voice cut through the chaos, unwavering. “You must choose! Save your brother or save yourself!”
The weight of her words crashed down on him. Somewhere within him, a truth blazed: Alex was lost, consumed by the very entity they chased. But if he brought Alex back, it might mean unleashing that dark force upon their timeline.
“What will happen to you if I let you go?” Jake pressed, tears blurring his vision.
“I’ll fade away… but if you choose me, he may destroy everything,” Alex gasped; his visage shimmered with dread.
In that instant, clarity hit. The cost wasn’t just his life, but the lives of everyone in his world. He made a choice, tearing at the bond that held them together.
“I love you, brother!” Jake cried, a sob ripping through him. “But I cannot let you back!”
The moment hung, suspended in agony. The shadow shrieked, a cacophony of anguish echoing through the warehouse as Alex’s form flickered. Jake’s resolve bolstered his own essence, reaching for the sigil with newfound power.
“By fire and time, I command you!”
In the ensuing flash, a rift opened, and the shadow exploded, relentless fury consuming it. Light engulfed Jake, flooding him with an overwhelming pull, this time planting his feet firmly on the ground.
Silence crashed down. Fresh air filled his lungs as the spectres dissipated, but the cost weighed heavily upon him. In the cold dawn light, surrounded by the shadows of the past, he emerged.
Elinor lay unconscious nearby, and Jake entered into the newly birthed world alone, feeling the ache of loss gnaw at him. The storm had passed, but the remnants of his brother’s essence would linger forever, a haunting reminder of the choice he never wanted to make.
As he let the sunlight bathe his face, he understood one irrevocable truth: some doors were meant to remain closed.
