Portal Keepers: Deadline for Deception

The sound of panicked footsteps filled the damp corridor, echoing through the dimly lit passage. Emma Ashford fought to steady her breath as she dodged the flickering light overhead, its bulb buzzing ominously. The air felt thick, charged, a sensation that prickled her skin. Time was not on her side; they were closing in, and she had only hours to stop what was about to unfold.

The Underground Order, a secret society sworn to protect a hidden portal deep beneath the structures of London, was on high alert. Rumours swirled about the impending “Awakening,” an event laced with sinister power that could unravel the fabric of reality itself. The Order believed they were guardians, its members devout in their protection of the portal, but Emma had once been a part of that fraternity, ensnared by their passions and promises. Now, she was only trying to escape their fate.

Having defected a year ago, Emma lived with a constant dread that her former companions would come seeking retribution. But today, fear had blossomed into a frenetic urgency. A childhood friend and former member, Owen, had gone missing, having been one of the last to openly question the Order’s rituals. The clock was ticking; they needed to obtain a key to the portal and seal it before the ceremony commenced at midnight.

She had barely stepped into the rickety flat of Owen when the smell of incense overwhelmed her senses. It was thick, cloying—an unusual concoction she immediately recognised from her time in the Order. Tucked behind a book on the shelf was a hastily scrawled note. “Find the Bastion. Before dawn. They will use me.”

Emma’s heart raced. The Bastion was not just any gathering place; it was where the final rites of the initiation took place, where spirits were said to surge through the portal under the influence of the lunar cycle. Had Owen known too much, or had he simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Emma darted out of the flat, her mind racing. She had to act quickly. As she sprinted through the city, streetlights creating a halo around her frantic movements, the shadows felt to grow longer, as though stretching forth with hands of darkness intent on stopping her. That primal instinct clawed at her—the need to shield herself from both man and spirit.

She reached the old warehouse first, its creaking doors reminiscent of past sacrifices. The words from the note echoed in her mind, “Before dawn.” She had until dawn to locate Owen and prevent the Awakening. The last vestiges of sunlight were ebbing, leaving behind a haunting dusk as she crept inside.

The cavernous space held a bitter chill, the walls lined with forbidden symbols. It seemed to pulse with a rhythm, a heartbeat almost, drawing her deeper. Each step stirred the dust, ancient and layered with the remnants of past ceremonies. It was a threshold she once stepped across with blind belief; now it felt like entering the mouth of a beast.

Suddenly, she heard a low, resonant chant, swirling and rising from the depths. Emma steeled her resolve and followed the sound. As she neared the stairs that descended into the underground chamber, a figure flitted through the darkness ahead, cloaked and hooded. Fear twirled with adrenaline as she instinctively pressed against the wall, the glimmer of a dagger catching the dim light.

“Emma,” the voice echoed through the gloom, cutting through her thoughts. It was cobwebbed with familiarity, yet distorted like a memory twisted by time.

“Milton,” she breathed, recognising the voice of one she had trained alongside, now ensnared by the Order’s twisted ideals. His eyes, however, bore more than mere loyalty; they displayed a fervent madness tethered to duty. “Where’s Owen?”

“Sacrifices must be made—his fate is sealed, and yours can be too. Join us, he can be saved.”

Desperation twisted in her gut. The Order had become a hive for manipulation, drawing in and breaking those who resisted. “You’re a fool. Their promises are a lie! Let him go.”

Milton’s resolute gaze shifted to something behind her. The flickering shadows danced, now more real than anything she’d encountered before. An oppressive presence settled in the chamber, a tangible weight that dragged at her very thoughts. Ghostly figures began to materialise, swirling like smoke, their faces contorting into silent screams, eyes void of souls.

Undeterred, Emma surged forward, ignoring the ethereal horror unfurling around her. “I won’t let them take him!” She pushed past him, down the stairs.

Milton snarled, snapping back to the chilling commands of the spirits, sinister whispers echoing in his mind. “You’ll regret this!” He lunged for her, but she evaded him, throwing herself into the chamber—the heart of the ritual.

Before her, Owen lay bound to an altar of stone, his eyes wide with terror, the incantations thickening the air above him like a storm. Candle flames flickered in unnatural synchronicity, hinting at the impending calamity. “Emma! Don’t come any closer!” His voice trembled, a warning laced with dread.

But the shadows grew bold, arcing towards him, whispering promises of power, of invincibility. Gamer instincts that had kept her alive within the Order now surged through her. She glanced at the time—barely an hour left.

“I’m coming for you,” she yelled, moving toward the rituals, conjuring from her memory scenes of binding symbols as she reached into her pocket. She had carved a small charm for emergencies, a meager token infused with her intent to protect.

As she fumbled for the charm, the whispering intensified, spilling laughter and resentment. A current surged through the chamber, thickening with darkness, two forces clashing—the spirits and her fierce determination.

“Emma!” Owen’s voice shattered the air. The spectral figures recoiled, angry curses colliding with the mortal realm. The spirits, once wary of her, now advanced with fervency, eager to complete the ritual.

In a quick decision, she raised her charm high—“By my own will, I sever these bonds!” The room quaked, the energy pulsating violently. In that moment, the realm shifted, the barrier of the portal rippling with a silent scream.

The connection she established flared, catching not just the spirits but the entire chamber in a whirlpool of light and darkness. A promise to shelter her friend twisted deep in her soul, her sacrifice of loyalty.

Then, with a final consonant thought, she let go. The charm exploded with a pulse of luminous energy, dispelling the spirits and shattering the altar. Owen’s bindings dissolved, and he fell forward, breathless but free.

But the cost was steep. As the power swirled back to the portal, Emma felt something dragging her in—the essence of her being tethered to the very portal she had sought to protect.

“Go!” she shouted, pushing Owen towards the exit. “Get out before it locks!” The weight of dual existence compressed around her—she was bound to this realm and the next.

And in that fierce reality, understanding washed over her. The sacrifices they made had power; they were the portal keepers she had sought to escape, but it would now be her choice to wield that power for good or madness.

“Move, Owen!”

With a heavy heart, she let the portal pull her into its depths, leaving him behind—she had saved him, but the deceiving portal keeper would take her in his place, binding her to the burden of the secret she could never reveal.

Now a guardian of the unseen, she watched as the spirals of time twisted and blurred, knowing that deception reached across the void—each choice a deadline drawn, a decision made with baleful implications. And as the dawn began to break above ground, Emma Ashford became the very thing she had tried so hard to escape.
